History of Avenue Progressive

Founding and Early Years:

Located in the heart of South Dallas, in the area known as "Queen City," The Avenue Baptist Church was established in May 1961. The church was originally established as a mission in response to the need for a church in one of the oldest African American communities in South Dallas. The church operated out of a storefront located at 2714 Grand Avenue. Because the location intersected two strong avenues, Grand Avenue and Oakland Avenue, the church was named Avenue Baptist Church demonstrating "A Way to Christ."

Rev. E. B. Glenn Dickens played a pivotal role in its formation as he began reaching out to workers to help build the congregation. On May 7, 1961, Rev. Glenn opened the doors of the mission and became discouraged when no one came to assist in the work. At that moment, he realized the only help he would need would only come from God! On May 28, he preached the first sermon of the new mission entitled, "A Mind to Work," and fifteen people united with the congregation. Afterwards, the church was organized by Mount Sinai Baptist Church and Rev. E. B. Glenn was chosen as the first pastor.

Name Change and Relocation:

In August 1963, the church moved from Grand Avenue to a property at 3745 Dildock Street, which was purchased from the Church of God In Christ, Pillar Ground and Truth.

In October 1973, the church affiliated with the Progressive National Baptist Church Convention and changed the church’s name to Avenue Progressive Baptist Church.

Leadership Transitions:

The Avenue Progressive Baptist Church has served the South Dallas Community for over 60 years. During that time-period, there have only been five pastors in its history.

Dr. Elmer Bahane Glenn Dickens, the founder and beloved pastor, served faithfully for over 39 years until his passing in November 2000.

Reverend Aaron Paul Vernon succeeded him and led the church for over a decade. In May 2011, Pastor Vernon was honored as Pastor Emeritus for his dedicated service.

Rev. Elmer Rogers took over as pastor until August 2013 and served until his relocation to Lindale Texas in 2014.

Rev. Raymond Shaw was elected pastor in October 2014 until his passing in January 2024.

Dr. Mancil Carroll III was selected to serve as Interim Pastor in April 2024.
